Why Is Roblox Called Roblox?

By Laius Entertainment Thursday, 13 August 2026 2 min read

Roblox was not always called Roblox. During early development, the project used the name DynaBlocks. By 2005, the shorter Roblox name had taken its place.

The name is widely understood as a combination of robots and blocks. Both fit an early platform filled with blocky characters, building pieces and physics experiments.

Why DynaBlocks changed

DynaBlocks explained the idea, but it was longer to say and type. A short name is easier to remember, put in a logo and use as the name of a whole community.

Roblox also left room for the platform to grow. The site soon became about much more than moving blocks around.

Was Roblox named after actual robots?

Not exactly. Roblox characters were not all robots, and modern avatars can look almost any way a player chooses.

The name fits the playful, mechanical style of the early platform rather than describing one story or character. Roblox has never had one main hero because players make the worlds themselves.

A name that became its own word

Today, most people hear Roblox and think of the platform straight away. The original robot-and-block idea is less obvious because the name has become a brand of its own.

Older names still appear in Roblox history videos and fan projects. If you see DynaBlocks, it usually refers to the prototype period rather than a separate game you can download.
