The History of Roblox Tix: What Happened to the Free Currency?

If you started playing Roblox after 2016, you might have heard older players talk about something called "Tix" or "Tickets." It was Roblox's free currency, and its removal is still one of the most talked-about moments in the platform's history.

What Were Tix?

Tix (short for Tickets) were a secondary currency on Roblox that players could earn for free just by logging in daily. You would get 10 Tix every day you visited the site, and you could also earn more by having other players visit your games. Tix could be used to buy certain catalog items, though the selection was more limited than what Robux could buy.

The Currency Exchange

One of the coolest features was the TixRobux Exchange, also called the "Currency Exchange." This system let players trade Tix for Robux and vice versa. The exchange rate fluctuated based on supply and demand, kind of like a real stock market. Players could earn Tix for free and then convert them into Robux, which meant you could technically get premium currency without spending real money.

Why Did Roblox Remove Tix?

On April 14, 2016, Roblox announced that Tix would be discontinued. The official reason was that the system had become too complicated and was being exploited by bots and scammers. People were creating fake accounts to farm Tix, then converting them to Robux and selling the accounts. This hurt the economy and made it harder for legitimate players to use the system fairly.

Roblox also wanted to simplify the platform. Having two currencies was confusing for new players, and maintaining the exchange system required a lot of resources. By focusing on just Robux, Roblox could streamline the experience and make it easier for developers to earn money from their games.

The Community Reaction

The removal of Tix was massively controversial. Many players were upset because it meant they could no longer earn premium currency for free. Petitions were started, and the hashtag "SaveTix" trended on social media. Some players even quit the platform in protest.

However, Roblox stood by its decision. To soften the blow, they held a "Tixapalooza" event where players could spend their remaining Tix on special items before the currency was completely removed.

What Replaced Tix?

Nothing directly replaced Tix, but Roblox did introduce other ways for players to earn rewards without spending money. Events started giving away free items, and the platform began offering promo codes that could be redeemed for avatar accessories. Developers also got better tools to monetize their games, which meant more opportunities to earn Robux by creating content.

Why Older Players Still Talk About It

For players who were around during the Tix era, it represents a simpler time when you could genuinely earn premium items without spending real money. It is a nostalgic memory of "the good old days" before Roblox became the massive platform it is today.

Could Tix Ever Come Back?

It is highly unlikely. Roblox has grown into a billion-dollar company, and the economy is now built entirely around Robux. Bringing back Tix would require a complete overhaul of the system, and it would probably create the same problems that led to its removal in the first place.

That said, Roblox continues to offer free items through events, promo codes, and partnerships, so there are still ways to customize your avatar without spending money.

The Legacy of Tix

Even though Tix are gone, they left a lasting impact on Roblox culture. They taught an entire generation of players about virtual economies, supply and demand, and the value of digital currency. For many, Tix were their first introduction to these concepts, and that is a legacy worth remembering.
